how to use ho'oponoponoYou might think that a powerful, beautiful and effective practice would be difficult to do or require lots of practice.

Ho'oponopono can work quickly or slowly, depending on how it is intended. It has many benefits, but the best is that you can do it yourself. It is also very simple.

This Hawaiian forgiveness technique is akin to chanting, or using a mantra. It's similar in some ways to meditating.

Sit somewhere quiet and comfortable. Close your eyes if you are comfortable doing so. Take several deep breaths.

The Mantra

Repeat the following mantra of four simple phrases:

″I love you. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you.″

The number of times you should repeat the Ho'oponopono affirmations is up to you, but the more times you can do it, the better.

Following the chanted mantra, it is relaxing to spend a few further moments in silence.

When you are ready, open your eyes, stretch and return to your day.

Who Are You Healing?

If you are aiming at healing yourself, then start the mantra with your own name:

"(Your name) I love you. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you."

If you wish to use the technique for someone else, begin with their name:

"(Person's name) I love you. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you."

Dr. Joe Vitale advises that you repeat the ho'oponopono affirmations no less than 108 times for the full effect to be experienced. However, to maintain the deepest inner calm, it is best not to tax your mind with counting, but just keep repeating until you feel you have done sufficient repetitions.

What Ho'oponopono Does

The surprising success of the ho'oponopono mantra is due to its focus on four spiritual aspects of healing that are equally important.

Included in this are:

  1. Love
  2. Repentance
  3. Forgiveness
  4. Gratitude

Let's take each of these and understand the healing power, of the process.

  1. I Love You (Love)

Love is certainly a powerful tool. In order to forgive, you must also show love. You can tell yourself and the other person that you love everything.
  2. I am Sorry (Repentance)

It is okay to be upset and sad. Take the issue which is troubling you, and tell yourself to be sorry.
  3. Please Forgive me (Forgiveness)

This shows that you seek forgiveness and expect to be forgiven. No matter from whom you want forgiveness, repeat it.
  4. Thank You (Gratitude)

Thank your God, yourself, and everyone else who has forgiven. Be grateful for all those who have forgiven you. Do not worry about the person you are expressing your gratitude to.

History Behind Ho'oponopono

Ho'oponopono is the modern interpretation of a traditional form of healing used in Hawaii by the ″kahuna″ or wise person/shaman of the family or group.

It was taken up and popularized by Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len when he used this form of Hawaiian prayer and forgiveness to cure an entire hospital ward for the criminally insane of without interacting in person.

Dr. Hew Len went through each patient's medical records, applied the ho'oponopono mantra and repeated the method. It changed detainees' mood for the better, raised their mental activity and even removed bad memories.

After several months, Dr. Hew Len was clearly able to heal the prisoners and allow them to be returned to normal prisons or in some cases attain early release back into society..
